“Sometimes we strive so hard for perfection

that we forget that imperfection is happiness.”

- Karen Nave

I was very delighted yesterday to find hydrangeas at my local florist (if you’re local  you have to check them out, Pamela of Creative Edge Design & Decor, has a super cute store). Not only it is Winter, but hydrangeas do not grow in Utah. Of course, I am very partial to hydrangeas since they grow abundantly in my home country of Portugal.

I picked a stem with beautiful tones of blues and yellows that remind me of tiny butterflies clustered together. Even though some of the flowers have creases, these little imperfections only make it more real and interesting.

Enjoy your weekend!

“Life is like playing a violin  solo in public
and learning the instrument as one goes on.”
- Samuel Butler

My daughter started violin classes this school year and she is doing really well.  We tried to go out and get a mini session but the weather was so cold, we only managed to be outside for a few minutes. We will have to try it again in the Spring, when the temperatures are nice and the trees are green again.

“A baby is God’s opinion that the world should go on.”

- Carl Sandburg

Here are a few more of little Claire’s photos from her session last week, on her 9th day:

She was a great smiler! And I love all the wrinkles in her arm, so cute!

She loved to be in this position. This is a 20×10 crop.

She has the best lips, so perfectly designed.

I love the splash of color from this blanket, so fun with the polka dots. It was a gift to her, it makes this image more special and personal.

This is my favorite image from her session, the light is so lovely and she looks so peaceful.

I think I like it even better in black and white.

Thank you, R, for inviting me over. Enjoy your images!

“God is in the details.”
- Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

“Every child begins the world again.”

- Henry David Thoreau

This is little Claire, who is 9 days old today. I love meeting new little ones and we had a wonderful session this morning.

This is just a sneak peek for her mom, more to come next week.

And one in black and white:

“Flowers are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty outvalues all the utilities of the world.”

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

It’s Winter in UT which is synonyme with gray skyes and dreary weather. I have been ‘itching’ to go out and shoot some flowers but, of course, there are none yet.

So I decided to go and visit a local florist. I didn’t know ahead of time what  I wanted, but this beautiful miniature calla lily stood out to me.

Despite the lack of sun and proper light this morning, I took my little flower out of its vase and had some fun with it by my front window.

I think I might do this again until Spring brings me some new ‘models’.

Sometimes I receive e-mails asking me what kind of equipment I use, and how I edit my photos. I thought it would be fun to let you in  and post a ‘behind-the-scenes’.

As a custom photographer, quality is of the utmost importance to me. This starts with beautiful images that are technically sound and as near perfect as possible. The better an image is to begin with, the better the end result will be. It also minimizes editing work as I believe that editing or processing a digital image should be to enhance it only and not try to correct problems. If an image is underexposed, out of focus or has color issues, the editing will not be enough to correct those problems and it will certainly be visible.

I shoot with a Nikon D700 camera and a combination of fixed length lenses that help me capture beautiful portraits. I have spent a lot of time (and still do) learning the technical aspects of digital photography and perfecting my abilities so I can produce the best quality images for my clients.  I use Photoshop CS4 for editing each image individually, and only with the goal of lending  a subtle, but efficient polish to each one, to bring the potential that was already there.

Here are some ‘before-and-after’ examples. ‘SOOC’ is a colloquial photography term that means ‘straight out of camera’; this would be the equivalent to a film negative.  I then edit each image individually which means I don’t rely on premade Photoshop actions; I take each image and bring out its best ‘by hand’, in the digital darkroom. I should also mention that I use a professionally color calibrated screen so that the color of each image is as true to life and flattering to the subject as possible.

Children photography is my passion- I love capturing the sweetness and freshness of a newborn, the emotion and laughter of a little girl, and the beautiful eyes full of wonder of a baby boy. As  a parent, when you hire me to capture your child’s special moment, you don’t need to worry about how the images will turn out- you can rest assured that my expertise and knowledge of digital photography will deliver beautiful portraits that you will cherish for years to come.

I am very excited for the New Year, lots of changes coming, lots of opportunities in the making.

First, you may have noticed that the blog looks a bit different, especially at the top. I had received some feedback that some of the drop-down menus were not working, so the new format is more user friendly. Hope you will like as much as I do.

Second, Reflections by Cindy has completely new pricing for 2010. I now offer 3 kinds of sessions (30 minute long Mini Session for 1 child, Full Session for multiple background changes/outfits or siblings, and Newborn Session) that include session fee, digital images on a disc and professional archival prints (Newborn Session also includes birth announcements and a display portrait). You will find that this new pricing list is more simple and yet more versatile. I still offer several professional products so be sure to send me an e-mail to request the full pricing list.

Third, for your convenience, I now offer natural light studio sessions at an indoor location in Tooele. These sessions are only for newborns, babies and young toddlers, for 1 or 2 small children only since space is limited. When booking your session, please let me know if you prefer to come to me and you will receive a discount on your session fee.

Happy New Year! Here’s to new beginnings!
