This is my personal collection of Nativity sets. I found some time to photograph these with my macro lens and it proved to be a fun project!

This is my oldest set, sent to me by my mother right after I got married. This is the set my family had when I was growing up and I believe it may be older than me. In fact, the baby Jesus figure doesn’t even match the Mary and Joseph figures, but I still love it, it’s my favorite. The making is traditional Portuguese folk lore painted clay.

This one was also sent by my mother. It’s newer and I believe of Italian making, painted fine clay or rough porcelain, whichever you prefer :) .

This is a Willow Tree, I love the texture on it and the closeness of the figures.

This is my newest set. It’s probably made of painted polymer and might even come from China, noting fancy for sure- I just like the details and the expressions.

Here’s the close up of baby Jesus from the above set.

Merry Christmas!

I’ve always had a fascination with all things paper. I love that photography results in prints and other products, like cute Christmas cards. And I can say cute because they do feature my very cute kids.

These are 5×5 trifolds that I ordered in 2 different kinds of paper and I really like the way they turned out. Just our simple way of wishing you ‘Joy | Peace | Love” for the Christmas season and the New Year.

Reflections Calendar wishes to thank all the sponsors and contributors for all the incredible support. We wish to thank all the sales volunteers and everyone who has bought copies of the calendar for themselves and as gifts- thanks to your generosity, Reflections Calendar has delivered almost $2500 to Tooele Valley Community Cooperative. Thanks to you, TVCC will be able to help many families and make a brighter Christmas for many children in the Tooele valley.

Thank You and have a safe, warm Merry Christmas!

“Photography takes an instant out of time,

altering life by holding it still.”

This is a ‘Thank You’ post- a sincere thank you to all my clients for inviting me into their lives to capture their precious children. I love meeting new children and I always love capturing their personalities, taking that little bit of time and freezing it for posterity. They will never be like that again, at whatever stage they are,  and I hope that the images I took are able to bring joy every single time they are looked at.

Here is a collage of each child and/or each session I had in 2009- hope these little faces will bring some joy to your heart this Christmas season:

Thank you for such a wonderful year in 2009! Here’s to all the best in 2010!

I was very happy when I saw the weather this morning. I waited a few hours until there was more light, and then I went out to try and capture some of this frozen fog. I was able to be outside for only 10 minutes, I despise the cold! But it was worth it:

Red landscape rocks make the background for this one.

Even a chain link fence looks different.

A softly backlit peach tree branch.

2009 macro collage webAs the end of the year approaches, I have been looking back at my past work. Some of my favorite images are the macro ones of flowers and insects- it’s very relaxing to take some time to enjoy nature and pay attention to little details that would otherwise go unnoticed.

There is always something unexpected.

Don’t miss a surprise coming soon…

Today I thought I’d share a little tip about creative cropping. Sometimes when I am processing an image, I get all excited about it but it lacks something, like the usual crop doesn’t work. It takes a bit of practise and a smidge of creativity to think outside the box and envision the true potential.

Let’s consider this image:

The subject is completely adorable (I ♥ newborn sessions!) and I like the pose, especially the positioning of his hands. This is the in-camera crop, which means this is how it came out of the camera as far as size and crop. I also noticed that I cut some of his toes on the right foot and that there is some lens distortion which causes disproportion in his body:

So I threw convention out the door, and tried a 20×10 crop instead of  customary 5×7 (I also converted this color image into a black and white to lend it a morel classic feel). This is the result:

By placing the subject closer to the right hand side of the frame, the image has more dynamic and visual interest- your eyes naturally rest on the baby’s face which is where the focus should be. The closer overhead crop took care of the distortion, while keeping important elements in (like toes and fingers).

Although I usually present a gallery with images cropped to a 5×7 ratio, I would include this one with  an ‘artistic note” suggesting the  20×10 crop. It would actually make a beautiful, modern canvas, a true work of art to be displayed in the home.

Creative cropping is as simple as that, thinking outside of the box.

Words
Utah Child Photography

“One of the hardest things in life
is having words in your heart that you can’t utter.”
- James Earl Jones

Just like an image is a powerful way to convey emotion and character, a deliberate word is worth it’s weight in gold. Before I delved into photography, I loved words and their meaning, and playing with both. I actually have a Master’s degree in English and Portuguese and I loved writing and reading (still do!).

I came across this idea on another photographer’s blog a while back, and fell in love with it:

salt lake city child photographyI made this one with words that relate to my photography business and used my business colors as well. It does not have all the words, I quickly realized I’d need twice the space in order to include all the words that I wanted.  And then I suspect new ones would be emerging all the time. Still, it’s partly like the word version of all my photography work, I love it.

Now I’m working on a personal version that will include the names of everyone in my family and words that have special meaning to us, that will describe who we are as individual and as a family. When I’m done, I plan on getting it printed as a large gallery wrap canvas so I can hang it up next to our family portraits. It will be a project for 2010.

reflections calendarJust a little reminder about the Reflections Calendar- we still have some calendars available for purchase. Calendars are $5 each and 100% of sales benefits the Tooele Valley Community Cooperative. This is such a great organization and they really need the funds at this time of year. TVCC helps families and individuals in crisis in the Tooele valley.

Calendars make great gifts for everyone on your list and you’ll be helping a great cause as well. You may purchase your own copy on the Reflections Calendar website through Paypal and I will mail it out to you in time for Christmas.  If you live in town, please check the “Where to Buy” page for a complete list of local retailers who carry the calendar in their stores.

We appreciate all the help!
