utah child photographyI just delivered this print order yesterday so I thought I’d share a quick picture of it. This is was from a recent Holiday Mini Session so they also received a custom designed digital Christmas card via e-mail to print at their leisure. I think it turned out fantastic and this picture does not do any justice to the actual high-quality prints.

I love photographing children, the sessions are so much fun, but I almost love it as much when I deliver the finished products, the mounted and textured prints and others. It is such a sense of accomplishment to see the process carried through and watch the excitment in the client’s face when they receive their order, just love it!

If you would like to see any samples of mounted prints, gallery wrap canvases or albums in person, just e-mail me to set up an appointment.

I met this brother and sister on saturday, they were so playful and active- this is just a bit of a sneak peek for mom. More to come soon!

My best friend is getting married today. I though I’d honor the auspicious occasion by posting some  images from her engagement  session. These were taken in Portugal in July. They are a very special couple and I wish them all the happiness as they start their new life together.

We had this session planned from the moment I arrived in Braga. We scouted all the best locations, thought of all the coolest things to do and when the day came, it rained the hardest I can remember on a Summer day.  It was only 3 days before I had to leave so I started panicking, scared that we had missed our chance. I spent most of the day in my friend’s apartment watching the heavy rain and gray skies.  Just as I was losing hope, there was a break in the weather in the late afternoon and we literally raced outside. To my surprise, behind the row of apartment buildings in her street, I found an undeveloped hill with wild trees and grasses and I knew I had the right location for this engagement session.

We had lot of fun and about 30 minutes before the rain came back. Sometimes things don’t turn out as you plan, but the outcome was just as special, if not more.

And now I will stop my ramblings and let the images tell the story of Fernanda and Domingos.

My favorite ‘hand shot’, showcasing the engagement ring that is traditional in Portugal.

You can see here how the trees framed the path that led into the fields, just beautiful.

This one is my friend’s favorite, for the silly look on her fiancé’s face.

This one is my favorite- they don’t know yet, but they’re getting a huge print of this one. ;)

A candid moment.

And some from her bridal session. I didn’t have her permission to post them until now :D Instead of  a traditional gown, she chose this beautiful retro-inspired soft gray silk suit that I absolutely loved on her:

Doesn’t she look beautiful?

And a final quote, because I’m feeling sentimental:

“Find a guy who calls you beautiful instead of hot, who calls you back when you hang up on him, who will lie under the stars and listen to your heartbeat, or will stay awake just to watch you sleep… wait for the boy who kisses your forehead, who wants to show you off to the world when you are in sweats, who holds your hand in front of his friends, who thinks you’re just as pretty without makeup on. One who is constantly reminding you of how much he cares and how lucky his is to have you…. The one who turns to his friends and says, ‘that’s her.’”

Fernanda, já sabes que tenho pena de não poder ter estado aí contigo para o vosso dia especial. Muitas felicidades e os maiores desejos de tudo de bom para vós. ♥

Sometimes I have clients ask why a certain image can’t be cropped differently from what I have suggested.  The following image explains the cropping ratios to 4×6, 5×7, 8×10, 11×14 and square print options:

This is how this image came out from the camera, with an 8×12 crop. Usually, when I am photographing a child during a session, I am careful to make sure that I have enough room when I compose the image so I can have extra space for cropping to most ratios.

Sometimes, however, when I have to chase a busy toddler (like this little one here), I pay more attention to facial expressions, eye contact and the emotion of the moment and not all images will end up with extra space around the subject. In a case like this, not all crops will work for all images. You can see how the lines for the 5×7 ratio are significantly different from the 8×10 crop. I actually prefer and recommend the 8×12 print as a more pleasing alternative.

When I crop an image for a print order, the artistic decision for the crop is carefully made as to preserve all the important elements and the spirit of the capture. The final print will be much more visually attractive and complete with a crop that enhances its value.

I hope this explanation has been able to clarify cropping and the reasons for it.

I can’t believe it’s been over 3 months since my vacation to Portugal! I finally had some time to sit down and put together a collage of some of my favorite spots that I visited on my trip, namely in Braga and Lisbon. These are memories that make me happy! I love my country, it’s such a beautiful place! These images almost make me homesick again.

I will have this printed as a 16×16 canvas and I will be gifting it to my mom (I hope she doesn’t see this!) since she was my travelling companion. I wish I could see her reaction when she gets it. :)

Come back to see a very special session that will be posted later this week! ;)

These sisters were such a delight to photograph! I love how their personalities shine through in these images, their own little selves captured in perfect moments. Big sister M was such a fun model and really enjoyed her time in front of the camera ; little H was so cute and loved to sit on the little chair.

The weather was beautiful and the Fall colors were the perfect background for this mini session. Mom and Dad, thank you for bringing them over, hope you will enjoy these!
