The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe.
If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened.
But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.
~Friedrich Nietzsche

It seemed a fitting quote to go with these images and on this holiday.

“Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving.
What you have caught on film is captured forever… it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.”
~ Aaron Siskind

This is Rose, who turned 11 years old earlier this month.

We finally had some time to go out to my favorite place and have a mini session in the evening. The weather has been very unstable, but we were graced with gorgeous light that day and I was very happy to get some beautiful captures.

It had been quite some time since I had had an outdoor session and I had really missed it. There is something quite tangible in the way that all the elements come together, the light and the sun, the environment and how it all relates with subject. To see the resulting images and the emotion and personality that was captured is a gift for the memory and the heart.

But enough rambling and on to some more images!

As much as I like color, I had to sneak some black & white ones, since there was so much richness in light and textures.

And, of course, I always love close-ups, the eyes are the most expressive:

She resisted but, at last, I got a genuine smile:

This next one is one of my favorites from the session, but I can’t decide between color and black&white:

And this one just makes me happy:

Her expression, the soft evening light and the beautiful surroundings all come together to make a gorgeous portrait.

Here’s hoping to more warm weather, beautiful locations and gorgeous models! :)

“Nothing is more simple than greatness:

indeed, to be simple is to be great.”

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

This Spring has been so wet and cold, it feels like it’s been ages since I went out to shoot something outdoors. It was getting to me.

I finally did yesterday, took my daughter for her birthday session (coming soon). It was lovely to see so many flowers and greens and little things a-buzzing (which I wasn’t able to get on camera this time).  I was very rusty, almost a stranger to being out of doors with my camera and lens after being inside for so many weeks.

I did find this one- I don’t know what it’s called but it’s buttery yellow center, tiny size and simple elegance was enough to beckon me to stay for a few minutes.

I have so many favorites from Addison’s session that I decided to post them all here. You will see how wonderful she did, and we got to try several different set ups.

And I know I had already posted the next one, but I like it so much that I couldn’t exclude it from this post:

I introduced sweet little Addison last week and I can’t resist posting a few more.
Her mom drove over 1 hour to get to the studio and when they arrived Addison was wide awake and ready to party. We swaddled her and waited for her to fall asleep and it was well worth the wait:

While she was drifting off, I got my macro lens and moved in for some close-ups:

She has the cutest little lips, don’t you think?

This has got to be my very favorite macro image- such an adorable detail!

Baby Andre was 7 days old last Wednesday when I went to his home.  I started his session with my usual routine and tried some nakey shots.

I think this one is my favorite, just look at his little hands by his cheek, so cute!

Despite his young age, he soon let me know that he was not in the mood to be without clothes. As soon as I wrapped him up, he was much happier and content:

Another favorite of mine, he loved the mohair wraps:

I had to sneak some macro shots, I love the details of his beautiful eye lashes:

I love this profile image, especially in black and white since the light was gorgeous that day:

I loved capturing baby Andre’s first photos, it is always so special to be to a part of such an important time in the life of a family. New babies are just the sweetest!  ‘H’, thank you for inviting me over, your baby boy is beautiful!
